Which famous personality or character shares your Myers-Briggs Personality Type?| The 16 Personalities |Part 1/2

What is the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator?

I’m sure the majority of you already know what the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator is and for those who don’t, let me inform you.

The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator is a self-report inventory designed to identify the various personality types of people, based on their preferences, strengths and traits. This test was developed by Isabel Briggs Myers and her mother Katherine Cook Briggs based on their work with Carl Jung’s theory of personality types.

These personality types are indicated with the help of combinations of 4 letters. Hence, there are 16 personalities.

Each of the four letters stands for a trait or preference. These letters are:

 1. I or E:

Mind: Introversion or Extraversion.

This aspect shows how we interact with our surroundings. An outgoing or extraverted person enjoys being with other people, participating in social gatherings, and is often known to be the life of the party whereas an introverted person focuses more on inner thoughts and tends to be reserved, quiet and introspective. Although, this has nothing to do with shyness or confidence.

So if you’re an extrovert, you’d go out with friends on a Friday night whereas an introvert would rather read a book or watch some T.V. series.  Yep, I’m an introvert.

2. S or N:

Energy: Sensing or Intuition.

This focuses on how people invest their energy, how they see the world and how they process information. Sensing refers to paying attention to details and focusing on the actual happenings whereas Intuition means “going with the hunch”, focusing on the bigger picture and believing or understanding something without any actual reasoning process

Individuals with the Intuitive trait prefer to rely on their imagination, ideas and possibilities. In contrast, individuals with the Observant trait focus on the actual world and things happening around them. They enjoy seeing, touching, feeling and experiencing – and leave theories and possibilities to others.

Observant here refers to sensing.

If your dreams tend to focus on the real world then you, certainly, are observant. However, if dragons and witches pop up in your dreams then Intuition is your way to go.

3. T or F:

Nature: Thinking or Feeling.

The words explain it all. The Nature scale determines how we make decisions and cope with emotions.

People with the Thinking (T) trait seek logic and rational arguments, relying on their head rather than their heart. They do their best to safeguard their emotions, shielding them from the outside world and making sure that they are not clearly visible. In contrast, people with the Feeling (F) trait follow their hearts and emotions and care little about hiding them. From their perspective, we should not be afraid to listen to our innermost feelings and share them with the world – these individuals tend to be compassionate, sensitive and highly emotional.

In a life-changing decision, would you trust your brains and logic to make the right choice or go with what your heart tells you to do?

4. J or P:

Tactics: Judging or Perceiving.

This aspect reflects our approach to work, planning and decision-making.

Judging individuals are decisive, thorough and highly organized. They value clarity, predictability and closure, preferring structure and planning to spontaneity.

Prospecting or perceiving individuals are very good at improvising and spotting opportunities. They tend to be flexible, relaxed nonconformists who prefer keeping their options open.

Would you rather spend time coming up with an organised set of goals and to-do lists or work while keeping your options open?

Well, those were the Analysts and Diplomats. Stay tuned to know more about the other 8 personality types (Of the groups: Sentinels and Explorers) which will be featured in my next post.

For most of the content of this post, I referred to 16 Personalities, a very helpful and navigable site which explains each personality type in great detail. Yes, there are other sites as well but I find this one the most accurate. However, do keep in mind that not all of your traits will always match with your personality type. And one personality type may have more than a single name so while searching them up, don’t get confused like me!

Some of the fictional characters that I’ve mentioned here show signs that others of their MBTI type don’t. Some people would debate whether Daenerys is an Introvert or Extravert while others wouldn’t agree with Gandalf being an INTJ. But whatever be the case, I promise you, I tried to be as accurate as I could. However, do share with me which characters, you think, belong to some other personality type. And do share your personality type in the comments below.

Well… I had taken this quiz a few months back. As it turns out, I am an INFP. And when I read the description in detail, I was surprised to find the similarities there! It’s indeed pretty cool. What’s yours?

    1. INFP, cool! I’m an INTP. A few months back, my personality type, too, was Mediator i.e. INFP. And before that, I distinctly remember it was INFJ. Well, change is the rule of the Universe, I guess.

      1. The Pensieve says:

😅 Personality types don’t usually change that fast. In fact they tend to remain the same lifelong unless a major event takes place in a person’s life…. So I really can’t fathom the reason behind this….

      2. I think personality can change while we grow up…well, the first time it changed, it became INFJ to INFP so I guess I became more perceptive( I don’t see how)…And then it changed from feeling to thinking. I’ve given the test twice in these past few days so I think I am an INTP. Either I hadn’t been very honest while giving the answers or maybe, my traits were just somewhere in between. Yeah, that happens. The quiz shows the percentage of traits too. And it turns out that my Introverted-ness was around 50% and my Extroverted-ness was around 40%. Close…

      3. The Pensieve says:

Oh right! I forgot that you were still a kid! 😅😉

Yeah, then it’s possible. Otherwise, adult personalities don’t really change that often. And plus, that test isn’t concrete… My introvert percentage goes into the 70s BTW… 😅 So I’m surely one.

Fascinating post. Thank you. I took the test and am apparently a mediator.

Only thing is I can’t really see what Gandalf has in common with the duplicitous Tywin Lannister or Severus Snape so not sure about the fictional matches.
